Beximco Limited, a concern of leading business conglomerate Beximco Group, is going to set up the country's first ever Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-based power plant to generate 150MW of electricity.
Beximco signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard with GE Power, a global leader in power generation and a concern of General Electric Company (GE), at the Beximco corporate office in the capital yesterday.
Vice-Chairman of Beximco Group Salman F Rahman and GE Power President and CEO Russell Stokes signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.
"It would be the country's fist LPG-based power plant. There are initiatives for natural gas, coal and oil-based power plants in Bangladesh," Salman F Rahman told journalists after the MoU signing.
"The government wants to generate electricity through alternative means. So, Beximco has taken up such an initiative to implement the goal. It would be possible to generate about 150MW of electricity. The LPG-based power plant would add a new dimension to the power sector," he added.
The Beximco vice-chairman expressed hope that the plant would begin supplying electricity to the national grid within two years
